The search for a space for a kindergar-
ten and a combined first/second grade
began simultaneously with an applica-
tion for 501(c) 3 non-profit status, for-
mation of a board of trustees, writing
articles of incorporation and by-laws,
securing liability insurance, and being
licensed by the state as a preschool/kin-
dergarten. Patty’s computer on the top
floor was humming! While the Aspen
school board would not agree to our
track proposal, they did agree to lease
space to us in the soon-to-be-vacated
Yellow Brick School. We would occupy
the building with independent infant
and child care operations.
However, the Aspen Elementary School
would not vacate their old building
until November and only after desper-
ate searching and through grace did
we find Mimi Schlumberger, director
of the children’s ski school at Butter-
milk Mountain, and the Aspen Skiing
Company willing to rent space to us in
the interim. Powder Pandas was nestled
in golden aspen trees, a magical space
in which to give birth. On September
9th, 1991, the bulging womb opened to
reveal the Aspen Waldorf School: nine
first graders, ten kindergarteners and
three teachers named Patty.
