113: Waldorf Education: For Our Times, or Against Them?

In November of 1999, Eugene Schwartz met Waldorf critic Dan Dugan to debate a host of issues concerning Waldorf education. Eugene spoke trenchantly and passionately on a host of issues, including the relationship of Waldorf education to anthroposophy, the challenges of public Waldorf schools, and the question of Waldorf schools as "religious" schools. This is the controversial lecture that sent shockwaves through the Waldorf movement.  $17.50

114: How Waldorf Education Meets the Needs of Adolescence

As everyone knows today, adolescents have strong personal opinions and are not interested in receiving guidance from adults; they express their uniqueness and individuality through their clothes, body piercing or tattooing, and they are biologically programmed to eagerly explore the mysteries of sexuality. Right? Wrong! This lecture explores these misconceptions and a number of other "modern myths about adolescence." These surprising insights may prove to be thought-provoking, and perhaps liberating, to parents and teachers of adolescents.  $17.50

115: Encounters with the Millennial Child

In spite of the best efforts of educators and psychologists, such childhood problems as ADHD, dyslexia, Asperger Syndrome, and schoolroom violence are increasing in incidence and severity. Are teachers and parents simply less capable of dealing with juvenile behavior - or are today's children really different? We will explore a new unfolding of soul and spirit that calls for a transformation of our ideas about childhood - and ourselves. Eugene's experiences as a parent and teacher in Waldorf and public schools served as the basis for his book Millennial Child (Anthroposophic Press). This lecture, given in Aspen, Colorado, also explores the effect of high

altitudes on children.  $17.50

116: History in the Waldorf School, a CD-ROM

Illustrated with many pages from student main lesson books, this CD-ROM provides a comprehensive survey of the history classes taught in the Waldorf school from grades five through eight. Eugene’s commentary places the study of history in the broader context of the Lower School curriculum. Requires MS PowerPoint 97 or later to view.  $17.50

117: Coming to Our Senses: Computers in Education

As the new century begins, educators are increasingly looking to technological solutions for a host of problems in our schools. In spite of limited research and less positive evidence, computers in particular are being adapted for a wide variety of classroom tasks. TV and movies, on the other hand, provide an educational experience for millions of children that runs parallel to their formal schooling. Eugene asks whether there are other ways to enrich education and bring joy into learning. Do the risks of "techno-pedagogy" outweigh the short-term excitement that it generates? Is "virtual reality" a substitute for the real thing? $17.50

118: Harry Potter, Millennial Child

Its astonishing popularity with adults and children alike has made Joanne Rowling's Harry Potter series a powerful twenty-first century phenomenon. According to this lecture, Harry Potter reflects the innermost longings of youngsters who have been called "magical children," "indigo children," or "millennial children," and whose presence is of the utmost importance in our time. For many parents, the novels pose worrisome questions: At what age should my child read these books? Are they merely "escapist" literature? We will look at the myths and archetypes that underlie Harry's character and explore what Harry Potter can teach us about today's child.  $17.50

Three CDs on Religion in the Waldorf School

At the request of many parents of various religious persuasions in Green Meadow Waldorf School, Eugene Schwartz gave the lecture Religion in the Waldorf School in January of 2001. He was then asked to give two more lectures in which he elucidated the relationship of Anthroposophy to Christianity, and explored how both of these world-views are connected to Waldorf education. Although these CDs (#119-121) may be purchased separately, it is strongly suggested that they be listened to as a set.

119: Religion in the Waldorf School

Jewish, Buddhist and Sufi families are inextricably linked with Waldorf schools in North America, argues Eugene Schwartz, and yet the Christian orientation of Waldorf education creates a tension that underlies the American Waldorf movement. Can we better understand this bond, and thereby effect a "creative tension" that may serve as a model for an increasingly pluralistic worldwide Waldorf school culture?  $17.50

 120: Anthroposophy and Christianity,

                                       Part One: Cosmic Christianity

Drawing on over 30 years' immersion in Rudolf Steiner's teachings, this lecture distills the contents of thousands of Steiner's lectures to present this comprehensive picture. He presents Steiner's lofty descriptions of the Nine Hierarchies and their relationship to humanity, the "Tenth Hierarchy." Have spiritual beings even been human beings? What were the "motives" for the creation of the world? What is the purpose of evil in the world, and how is it linked to humanity's mission? Drawing upon a modern path of self-development, this lecture elucidates these questions.   $17.50

121: Anthroposophy and Christianity,

                                       Part Two: Christianity on Earth

Themes include: the relationship of lower-ranking hierarchical beings to the "gods" of ancient paganism, and the special role of the ancient Israelites in developing monotheism. Among the topics covered in this comprehensive lecture are: the nature of Jesus of Nazareth as described in Steiner's Gospel studies; the role of sacrifice and renunciation in world evolution; the old Mysteries and the new approach to the spiritual world, and what it means to call a Waldorf school "Christian."  $17.50
